The Most Popular Bars in Downtown State College

Something that has become quite a tradition at Penn State not only among the students, but those visiting as well, is stopping by the vast amount of bars downtown. On this page you will find a few of the most popular options and some of our member favorites described in detail.

The Saloon at State CollegeThe Saloon was built in 1976 and modeled after an early 1900’s English pub but resembles somewhat of a plain saloon to most people. It is popular destination among students for the classic 21st birthday party. There are 16 beers on tap and it is home of the famous “Monkey Boy”. Regulars will recommend the “Bong Water Monkey Boy” and mention that there are plenty of TV’s for sporting events. The best days of the week to go are on Sundays and Thursdays.

The Phyrst Bar in State College

The Phyrst at Penn StateThe Phyrst is modeled after an Irish pub and is another one of the most popular bars in town. They have a unique feature called the “mug club” which for $30 you can join and enjoy almost 50% off all draft beer and an Armetale Phyrst mug. They even allow you to leave your mug hanging on one of their almost 900 hooks on the ceiling so you don’t have to keep track of it! (or you can take it home). The Phyrst is known among it's regulars for having great nightly specials and awesome bands on stage.

Zeno's at State CollegeZeno’s is located on Allen street right next to the Allen street grill and is our recommendation here at PSU Moms. It is a modern bar offering 80 beers from all around the world. They offer high speed wireless internet and bands live on stage. Zeno’s has received recognitions such as one of the top 50 best places to have a beer in the US! You can follow them on Twitter using the name ‘ZenosPub’.

The Allen Street Grill in State College

Our Favorite Bar in State College

Here at PSU Moms we love the Allen Street Grill and would like to also make mention of their full bar upstairs in the restaurant. It is a sit down bar and can be visited any time separate from any restaurant reservations. If you feel like a drink in a bit classier of a setting, choose the Allen Street Grill!
