The Best Restaurants in State College & Around Penn State University

There are several different types and styles of dining in State College randing from fast food to luxury sit down dining. Here are some top recommendations from our PSUMoms members.

Fast Food and Delicious Take Out

Penn State Berkey Creamery

The Penn State Creamery - The Penn State Berkey Creamery, located on campus, is the best place in town to get ice cream hands down. There are several flavors you can get in a cone, dish, or spun into milkshake. This is a must do while visiting State College and has been a Penn State tradition since 1865.

DP Dough CalzonesDP Dough – DP Dough is a custom calzone shop which has several choices from breakfast calzones with eggs bacon and sasuage, to a more substantial calzone with chicken, beef, vegetables and cheese. You can choose one from their extensive pre-crafted menu or customize your own with any fillings you want

Canyon Wings – Wings are one of the most popular food options among college students and there are no shortage of places to get them in downtown State College. Sometimes the key factor is price vs value and the clear cut winner is Canyon Wings. Canyon's wings can be purchased for $6 a dozen and can be selected from an entire dry erase board full of sauce choices.

Canyon Pizza – Canyon Pizza is a very well known ‘on the go’ pizza place located on Beaver Avenue and has been made famous for their $1 slices. They do a heavy volume of sales during lunch and dinner so we recommend that you go on off-peak hours. However, it's also a great place to swing in at any time of day, they're open until 3:00AM!

The Penn State Sub Shop - located on 225 E. Beaver Ave the Penn State Sub Shop is a good local non chain sandwich restaurant famous for cheese steaks and fries with low prices.

Boots - Boots Sub shop is also a famous cheese steak shop located under “The Graduate” apartment complex on Beaver and Atherton. It gets excellent ratings however it is also noted to be somewhat expensive compared to the average sandwich place located in downtown State College.

Penn State Are U Hungry Sub Shop

A Sandwich from Are U HungryAre U Hungry - All we can say about this place is that it is EPIC. They specialize in ‘fat sandwiches’ which are basically cheese steaks with anything else you want on them. You can get a cheese steak with chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, french fries, bacon, onion rings and much more, all right on the sandwich! The fat and calorie content is through the roof, but it is a must try restaurant. Are U Hungry has the whole hearted approval and recommendation of the PSU Mom staff, we promise you will not be disappointed.

Sit-Down and Dine-In Restaurants

Allen Street GrillThe Allen Street Grill – This is a much more upscale restaurant located on the corner of Allen Street and College Avenue. They have what they describe as traditional American cuisine, cater late night specials, and even have banquet space available for special events such as weddings! They have a full bar and a wide variety of meals to choose from and from the personal experience of the PSU Mom staff, we can tell you that their food is really something special. The service you will receive at the Allen Street Grille puts them over the top to make them one of the best, if not THE best, restaurant in State College. We recommend any seafood they have as the daily special!

The Corner Room – The Corner Room is actually located directly below the Allen Street Grill and is a Diner style, sit down restaurant with lots of available seating. They have excellent milk shakes and very fast service even when there are lots of guests. The Corner Room is a very family oriented choice; there will be something for everyone here.
